After the release
of his original School-to-Career book entitled
“A Student’s Guide To Success In The
Real World: Method To The Madness”, educators
pleaded for a new version that was targeted to
younger readers and Voc./Tech programs. This book
is the result and becomes the “General”
curriculum edition to complement the updated re-release
of Mr. Jell’s original book, now entitled
“So... You Want A Great Job When You Graduate:
A Student’s Guide To Success In The Real
World,” which becomes the “Advanced”
curriculum edition.
Like his first book, John Jell also wrote this
version in a user friendly manner that student’s
will enjoy with significant input from business
and education leaders. This book is targeted to
student's starting high school, or thinking about
joining the workforce straight from high school.
Like Mr. Jell’s original book, this version
also has received critical acclaim from educational
leaders, including a rare endorsement from Ms.
J.D. Hoye. Ms. Hoye was appointed by President
Clinton to oversee National School-to-Work Office
and the creation of School-to-Work and School-To-Career
partneships across the United States. She is currently
President and CEO of “Keep The Change, Inc.”.
As Ms. Hoye states:
“John Jell has filled a critical need
by producing a tool that helps young people connect
what they are learning to what they hope to do
in the future.”
This book is a version that toplines many concepts
discussed in in “So…You Want A Great
Job When You Graduate!?” with less detail
and no statistics. Based on educator feedback,
it has more of a Voc/Tech skew and encourages
students to get focused, take initiative, and
pursue a career they have developed an interest
in.
Some of the topics covered include:
- Walk students through some simple reality
check questions to help them get focused on
tomorrow
- Make a clear distinction between a job
and career
- Clearly illustrate what employers are looking
for in today’s marketplace for entry
level workers, regardless of the field
- Clearly illustrate the importance to students
of getting a balanced education between academics
and the development of real world skills and
experience
- Walk students through the importance of
grades, degrees, and experience acquisition
in prepartion for graduation day
- Lay out models and provide exercises to
help students identify and refine their likes,
dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities,
and threats
- Clearly discuss what colleges are looking
for and how students can pay for their post-secondary
education
- Discuss not only the actual financial costs
of a post-secondary education, but also introduce
readers to the never before discussed concept
of education opportunity costs
- Integrate real life stories to help reinforce
concepts and ideas discussed
- Provide students the opportunity to apply
what they have learned at home or in the classroom
to maximize their competitive advantage come
graduation day
